Balance Disorder Causes Dizziness, Motion Sickness & Vertigo
Many people will describe dizziness in different ways. Many will describe dizziness as a lightheaded or floating sensation accompanied with unsteadiness. Vertigo is a more specific class of dizziness that is an illusion of movement of a person or surrounding environment. Often it is described as the room spinning. Motion sickness is often associated with dizziness, but it is triggered by motion, such as riding in a car, boat, or plane. However, what dizziness, motion sickness, and vertigo all have in common is that they are typically caused by an unbalance of the equilibrium. The equilibrium or the balance system is very complex and is connected to, and part of, the nervous system. The nervous system is composed of several parts starting with the inner ear or also referred to as the labyrinth. The inner ear monitors the direction of motions we do every day. Another part of our nervous system is our eyes. The eye also monitors motion as well as the space surrounding our body. Then there is the central nervous system which is our brain and spine where both the eyes and inner ear connects. Symptoms of motion sickness or dizziness often originate from one of these three major parts of our nervous system.
Dizziness Causes
There are a number of reasons and/or conditions that can lead to dizziness. It could be due to a certain medical condition which as diabetes, high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol or even heart problems or circulatory problems. Another cause of dizziness can come from certain medications and how they may interact with an individual person. Other causes of dizziness and/or vertigo can be due to an infection in the inner ear. Since the inner ear is connected to your body’s nervous system, even a minor infection can cause dizziness and vertigo.
Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV)
Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV) is when you become dizzy after changing a body position such as standing up. BPV is due to a dislodged Otololith crystal that may have entered one of the semicircular balance canals, BPV can be due to a minor head trauma. Meniere’s Disease is a disorder in the inner ear that is often accompanied with tinnitus, nausea, or vomiting which leads to severe vertigo and often cause loss of balance. In such cases many people will fall and injure themselves. Another cause for dizziness can be as simple as allergies. Allergies cause the body to react against the foreign invader that your body may be sensitive to, which is why many people get a stuffy noise. When the nose becomes stuffed, it interacts with the body’s nervous system which is why many will feel dizzy.
