Do You or Your Child Have Ears that Stick Out?

Otoplasty or ear surgery, can improve the shape, proportion or position of the ears. Defects in the structure of the ear can be corrected and it can treat ears that are misshapen due to an injury. Protruding or disfigured ears can be corrected along with overly large ears, a condition called macrotia. Both ears are usually affected and the surgery is performed on both ears at the same time. If there is a big difference or one ear was affected by an injury, then that ear will be corrected to match the other. Steps are taken in ear surgery to create a natural shape and to have the ears be proportionate and balanced with the face, making them fit better with the natural contours.

Ears that Stick Out? Ear Correction Solution

You will start by having a consultation to discuss the concerns you’re having and the results you’re hoping for. A medical history will be done and all medications you’re taking will be discussed along with any issues you have had with past surgeries. Any techniques used will depend on the abnormality. There may be an insufficient amount of cartilage to support the fold of the ear, or too much cartilage where the ear canal starts. These two factors will cause the ear to protrude. When ears are too large, the cartilage will be removed or reshaped and is then held in place with sutures and positioned closer to the head. Scars stay hidden as the incisions are made in the natural folds of the ear. The procedure is performed on an out-patient basis under general anesthesia.

Cost of Ear Pinning or Otoplasty Surgery

The cost of otoplasty may vary from one surgeon to the next for a few reasons. Some of the factors not included in this price are the location of the practice with the living cost of that area, the fee charged by the surgeon and the anesthesia and surgical room charges that will differ depending on the qualification and the experience of the surgeon.

Child with Protruding Ears? Pediatric Otoplasty

Are you a parent of a child being bullied because they have prominent ears? Otoplasty is safe to perform on children as young as five. This is the age that a child’s ears have reached their full size. Children between the ages of four and six have cartilage that is still soft enough to remold and manipulate so it can be done before they start school to avoid bullying. Kids can be mean. Small changes can bring wonderful results in appearance and self-esteem.

Ear Surgery

Otoplasty plastic surgery should only be performed by a surgeon with experience in facial procedures. Results from otoplasty last a long time, but aging and gravity can cause changes to occur which happens with any surgery. If your child is being teased or you’ve had concerns about your own ears your whole life, you can do something about it! Call ENT Specialists today for a consultation.
