Having facial scars often leaves one feeling self conscious. They can be derived from severe acne, burns, past surgeries, or accidents. Depending on how many layers of skin was affected, impacts the recovery period. When the scar is formed, it is permanent, but thanks to surgical options, many of these scars can be made less visible, depending on a few factors. Facial scar revision is a surgical technique designed to help make facial scars less visible if not completely faded. Surgery typically involves removing the scar tissue entirely when a scar is of the contracture type. Flaps that are comprised of unscarred and healthy skin adjacent to the scar, are lifted and moved to create a new incision line. A skin graft may be used if a flap is not recommended. Time is essential following surgery for new blood vessels and soft tissue to form when a skin graft involving sections of skin tissue from one area and attaching it to another is performed. A method to move a scar from one area to another is known as Z-plasty where it is usually a natural fold or crease in the skin to minimize its visibility. Z-plasty does not completely remove the scar but it does make it significantly less noticeable. Other methods used by surgeons, laser resurfacing and dermabrasion, are used to make scars that are rough or elevated, less prominent. It is done with an abrading tool or laser light that removes the upper layers of skin. The scar will remain behind, but it will be smoother to the touch and less visible. First treated with injections of steroids to reduce size, Keloid or hypertropic scars will often be surgically removed if the injections did not leave satisfactory results. The incisions are closed with fine stitches in effort to make the scars less prominent after the Keloid or hypertropic scars are surgically removed.
Expectations after facial scar revision surgery include feeling some discomfort. Generally unavoidable, some swelling, bruising, and redness will follow. But the doctor and staff will remind you of all the home care you need to follow up on to reduce this discomfort and ensure the effectiveness of your surgery. Just remember, skin needs time to heal. Generally, surgeons strongly insist on decreasing your activity after your surgery. Expect the surgeon to have you use cold compresses to reduce swelling, keep your head elevated when lying down, and to avoid places and situations where it can cause undue stress to the incision area. More often than not, you will be given a breakdown on what activities should be avoided in conjunction with the type of facial scarring surgery you received. Medication is prescribed in incidences where it is needed and any other medication needs to be related to the surgeon prior to the surgery. Scar tissues require a year or more to fully heal and achieve maximum improved appearance, so do not expect optimal results a day or two after your surgery.
