What Part of the Ear Helps Maintain and is Responsible for Balance?
Have you ever felt like the world around you is spinning? Like you might tip over any minute? These are all issues with your balance. You may not realize this, but your ears have a big effect on your balance system. There are several illnesses that can cause dizziness and the feeling that you are unstable. ENT Specialists is here to talk about some of the reasons that you may feel dizzy or lose your balance and how that is directly related to your ears.
Balance AKA Vestibular System Function
Another word for your balance system is the vestibular system. It is what makes you able to walk, run, stand and move without falling over. Your brain, ears, sight, and skeletal structure all play a part in your vestibular system. Your equilibrium is located in the inner ear and consists of numerous canals and fluid that work together to help us feel balanced.
What are the Signs of Vestibular System Problems?
If you are feeling unbalanced or unsteady for any reason, it could be an easy fix. There is always the chance that there is something more serious going on though. You should always seek medical attention if you are feeling dizzy for any reason. Here are some signs that you might have issues with your vestibular system:
• Rapid eye movement that is involuntary
• Any abnormalities when you walk.
• Extreme dizziness and unsteadiness
• Any suspected vestibular disease
If you are experiencing any of the signs listed above, a Doctor such as at ENT Specialists may perform tests to check your symptoms and find an answer for you.
Different Types of Balance Disorders
Through a series of tests, your doctor may find that you have a balance disorder. Some balance disorders include:
• Labyrinthitis – this is an infection in your inner ear that can make you feel dizzy and unsteady.
• Anxiety – If you have this panic disorder, it may cause you to feel dizzy and it can often be confused with vestibular disorders.
• Menier’s Disease – This is a dreadful disease that can cause hearing loss, extreme vertigo, loud ringing in your ears, and even the feeling of a fullness in your ear. Doctors aren’t sure what causes this disease.
• Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo (BPPV) – This is a common balance issue that happens when you move your head. It is a short, and intense sensation of vertigo that can happen as easily as looking upward. The cause of this disease is unknown as well, although, it can be caused because of a head injury or inner ear infection.
Balance Disorder Treatment
Often times, the treatment for a balance disorder is simply to treat an ear infection. There are several cases that are much more complex though. You may need to go through physical therapy to retrain and rehabilitate your vestibular system. For some patients, diet changes can help with their balance issues. Things like restricting alcohol use, less caffeine, and avoiding nicotine are all contributors to some balance problems.
